Unitree's IPO retail tranche was oversubscribed thousands of times over — what that premium is actually pricing in

Retail subscriptions for Unitree’s Shanghai STAR Market IPO closed this week after individual investors submitted roughly 9.8 million orders. Brokerages reported the multiple two ways: about 8,289 times the retail allotment before regulators clawed back shares from the institutional tranche to feed the retail pool, and 5,526 times after. Either way, the lot-winning rate for retail applicants came out near 0.018% — for every 5,500-odd applications, roughly one won the right to buy shares. Allotment results are due August 14; the company sold 40.4 million shares at 150.8 yuan each, raising about 6.1 billion yuan (~$904 million).

We covered the pricing two weeks ago and noted the number that mattered wasn’t the $9 billion valuation but the margin behind it: 2025 net profit of 591 million yuan on a 61 billion yuan valuation works out to roughly 100 times trailing earnings — high, but at least tethered to a real, profitable business selling a $4,900 R1 AIR and a $13,500 G1. An IPO subscribed thousands of times over by retail buyers is a different signal. It’s not evidence that today’s unit economics justify the price; it’s a bet that Unitree keeps compounding revenue at the 40%+ clip management guided to for H1, for years, in a market that doesn’t have that volume of paying customers yet.

None of this changes what’s on the price list. IPO proceeds are earmarked in the prospectus for new hardware, software and a manufacturing base — not a fresh war chest for another round of cuts on the Go2 line. If you’re pricing a robot to buy, the retail frenzy is noise; if you’re pricing the stock, it’s the whole story. Trading is expected to open in the days following the August 14 allotment — we’ll note where shares actually settle once that happens, since a subscription multiple is what people were willing to bid, not what the market has tested yet.
