Chinese vs Western Service Robot Prices (2026): The Gap Is 1.5×, Not 10×

In June 2026, Yunji Technology filed for a Hong Kong listing. Buried in the prospectus is a number that no marketing department would have volunteered: the average price the company actually realised for its RUN hotel-delivery robot in 2024 was RMB 13,100 — about $1,820.

Put that next to a US price list, where a restaurant delivery robot runs $13,000 to $22,500, and you have the makings of a very satisfying story about Chinese manufacturing eating the West alive. That story is wrong, or at least it is wrong in the specific way that makes it useless to anyone actually buying a robot.

We track 24 service robots, 21 of them with a documented purchase price. Here is what the numbers say when you line them all up.

The short answer

Comparing the medians of everything we price, Chinese-made service robots run about 1.6× cheaper than Western and Japanese ones. Strip out the two American categories that have no Chinese equivalent at all — the $180,000 Richtech ADAM dual-arm barista and the $50,000–$100,000 Hyphen Makeline — and the gap narrows to 1.5×.

One and a half times. Not ten. And in the single category where the comparison is genuinely like-for-like — a wheeled robot that carries trays around a dining room or a hotel corridor — the gap effectively disappears.

Where nationality stops predicting price

This is the table that should end the debate. Every one of these robots does the same job: it drives itself across a floor carrying things, avoids people, and returns to a dock.

The American Servi Plus, at $13,990 for a 40 kg tray robot, is cheaper than the Chinese BellaBot, cheaper than the Chinese HolaBot, and cheaper than the Chinese DINERBOT T10. It costs five dollars less than the Chinese KettyBot Pro, which carries a quarter of the load.

If country of manufacture were the dominant variable, that table would sort itself by flag. It does not sort by flag at all. It sorts, roughly, by payload and by what the seller bundles into the box.

So where does $1,820 come from?

Three things, and none of them is “Chinese robots are ten times cheaper.”

It is a realised price, not a list price. The RMB 13,100 figure is what Yunji’s hotel customers actually paid on average across a year of Chinese domestic sales — a number disclosed to a stock exchange, which is why we trust it more than most marketing copy. It is not a price you can take. Chinese retail listings for the same RUN have appeared around RMB 21,800, or roughly $3,030, which is why our index carries the model as a range rather than a point.

It is a smaller machine. The RUN carries 10 kg and stands 90 cm tall. It is a corridor courier: it takes a toothbrush to room 412 and comes back. A BellaBot hauls 40 kg of loaded plates through a dining room, and a HolaBot takes 60 kg of dirty dishes back to the kitchen. Comparing the first to the last two is comparing a hand truck to a forklift.

The Chinese domestic market had a price collapse. This is the part of the Yunji filing that deserves more attention than the headline number. Between 2022 and 2024, the average selling price of the RUN fell from RMB 23,200 to RMB 13,100 — down 44%. Its multi-function sibling, the UP, fell from RMB 54,200 to RMB 22,300, down 59%. Prices more than halved in two years, in a market with dozens of competing vendors chasing the same hotel chains.

That collapse is real and it is documented. But it happened inside China, to prices realised in China. It does not automatically follow the robot across a border.

What the border adds

When a Chinese service robot appears on a Western price list, the number has picked up a series of things that the Chinese domestic ASP never included. Our own price notes, drawn from the distributor listings themselves, spell out what is in and out of each figure:

Import duty, freight, a local entity that answers the phone, a technician who can reach your site, spare parts held in-country, and a warranty someone will honour — these are the difference between a factory price and a price you can transact at. They are also, not coincidentally, the things a buyer discovers are missing about six weeks after choosing on sticker price alone.

The subscription layer changes the arithmetic again

Roughly half the market does not sell you a robot at all. It rents you one, and the monthly rate reshuffles the ranking:

A KettyBot Pro at $395 a month reaches its own purchase price in about 35 months. Relay Robotics does not publish a purchase price at all; its CEO has said on the record that the subscription works out to roughly $75,000 over three years, which makes the most expensive hotel-delivery robot in this article an American one that you are not allowed to buy.

That is the more useful way to read the market. The expensive robots are not expensive because of where they were built. They are expensive because they are sold as a service, with the labour of keeping them running priced in.

What the collapse predicts

The Yunji filing is worth reading as a forecast, not just a fact about 2024. A 44% price drop in two years is not a discount campaign; it is what happens when a category commoditises and a dozen vendors chase the same customers with functionally similar hardware.

The same compression is visible in our own data, one layer up. The cheapest tray-carrying robot on a Western price list is now the PuduBot 2 at $6,500 — less than half what the BellaBot fetches from the same maker through the same channel, for the same 40 kg payload. When one manufacturer’s own line-up spans a 2× range at identical payload, the price is being set by positioning and bundling, not by the bill of materials.

For a buyer, that has a practical consequence: in this category, waiting is cheap and locking in is expensive. A three-year subscription signed today at $1,195 a month is a bet that prices will not fall — in a market where the audited evidence says they fell by nearly half in twenty-four months. The purchase-versus-subscription question, which usually turns on cash flow, here also turns on which way you think the price curve is going.

For a seller — and this is the uncomfortable half — the Western margin that pays for the local entity, the technician and the spare-parts shelf is the same margin the compression is coming for. The gap we measured at 1.5× is not a law of nature. It is the current price of having someone answer the phone.

Where a real gap does exist

Two categories in our index have no priced Chinese competitor, and there the Western numbers stand alone: automated food assembly (Hyphen Makeline, $50,000–$100,000, a figure its CEO stated on the record) and dual-arm beverage service (Richtech ADAM, $180,000). We do not publish a gap for these, because a gap needs two sides.

And the direction reverses in cleaning. The Chinese Gausium Scrubber 50 Pro lists at $39,999–$43,000. The Japanese SoftBank Whiz lists at $25,000. In floor care, the Chinese machine is the expensive one.

How to compare properly

If you are actually buying, the country of origin is close to the least informative number on the page. In order of how much money they move:

  1. Ask for a landed, installed price. Freight, duty, mapping, commissioning and training routinely add a third to a sticker price, and every one of them is quoted separately by default.
  2. Price the service, not the robot. Three years of subscription is the real comparison unit. At $395/mo versus $1,195/mo, two robots with nearly identical spec differ by $28,800 over that period — more than either machine costs.
  3. Ask where the spare parts are. A brush, a squeegee and a battery are consumables. If they ship from Shenzhen on a four-week lead time, the cheap robot is not cheap.
  4. Match the payload to the job. Half the apparent price spread in the table above is simply 10 kg versus 40 kg versus 60 kg.
  5. Treat any single sensational number with suspicion, including ours. The $1,820 that opens this article is an audited figure from a stock-exchange filing, and it is still the wrong number to budget with.

Methodology

Every figure here comes from our index and carries a source and a verification month on its own model page. We record a price only when a manufacturer, an official store, a distributor listing, a tender or an on-the-record statement publishes one; estimates are labelled as estimates and never presented as offers. Where a robot is sold only by subscription, the purchase-price field stays empty and the rate goes in the note — which is why several robots in this article appear in the subscription table and nowhere else.

One caveat we would rather state than have pointed out: our Western sample is small (nine priced models, six after excluding the unmatched categories) and skews American. As we add priced European and Japanese models the medians will move, and this article will be updated when they do.
