Tesla says Optimus production has begun in Fremont — still no price, no order button

In its Q3 2026 update on October 21, Tesla said Optimus production has begun in Fremont on its high-volume lines, describing the units as the first production-quality bots it has built. Tesla also said the current manufacturing process is suitable for a commercial product, while the hardware and process will keep changing. We could not open Tesla’s own documents from our tooling, so the details below come from secondary reporting of the update.

What was said, and what was not

What it means for price

Nothing yet. Tesla Optimus stays not-for-sale in the index with no price attached. The $20,000–$30,000 figure that circulates is a long-term at-volume aspiration, not a quote, and there is no reservation, waitlist, deposit or lease channel. Any site taking Optimus deposits is not Tesla.

A line that has just started an “early ramp”, with output going to Tesla’s own data collection, does not produce a retail price. Our read: this moves Optimus from “prototype” to “pilot production”, and that is all. Compare with last week’s report of Optimus on the Model Y line: the production story is growing, the buyer’s story is not.
