Unitree shares surged 629% on their Shanghai debut — that's a stock story, not a robot-price story
Unitree began trading on Shanghai’s STAR Market today, and the stock opened at 1,100 yuan a share — 629% above its 150.8 yuan IPO price — before pulling back below 900 yuan within the first hour. At the open, that put the company’s market cap near 445 billion yuan, roughly $66 billion. The IPO itself priced the company at about $9 billion two weeks ago; we covered that pricing and the retail subscription frenzy that followed, and said we’d note where shares actually settled once trading opened. Today’s the day, and the number is a lot bigger than the IPO price implied.
Worth being precise about what moved and what didn’t. What moved: the price someone will pay for a share of Unitree the company, based on retail investors betting on years of compounding growth in a market that doesn’t yet have the customer volume to justify it at face value. What didn’t move: the price you pay for a Unitree robot. The R1 AIR is still $4,900. The base G1 is still $13,500. The Go2 Air still starts at $1,600. None of those numbers are set by the stock market — they’re set by Unitree’s manufacturing cost structure, which we noted runs at north of 60% gross margin even at these prices.
A 629% first-day pop, the largest of any Shanghai listing this year, tells you retail investors think Unitree’s growth story is worth a premium multiple. It doesn’t tell you the R1 is about to get more expensive, and it doesn’t mean a price cut is coming either — IPO proceeds were earmarked in the prospectus for hardware, software and manufacturing capacity, not price competition. If you’re shopping for a robot rather than a stock, today’s headline number is noise. The price list that matters is the one on Unitree’s own store.
