How much does a robot for AI or robotics research cost in 2026? Anywhere from $599 for a desktop arm you can put on a lab bench to $127,000 for a hand alone, before you’ve attached it to anything. “Research robot” isn’t a category in anyone’s catalog — it cuts across humanoids, quadrupeds, arms and mobile manipulators, unified only by who’s buying: university labs, AI startups doing embodied-AI data collection, and teaching programs, rather than factories or restaurants. That buyer changes what matters. A research lab cares less about IP-rated enclosures or duty cycles and more about whether the SDK is actually open, whether the vendor will still exist in a year, and whether the sticker price is the real price or a starting bid before add-ons.

All figures as of August 2026. Line them up and the pattern is: the cheapest way into robotics research has never been cheaper, and the most expensive component in the stack is still a hand, not a body.

The cheap end: desktop arms under $16,000

The bottom of this market is a genuinely different product than an industrial cell. Elephant Robotics’ myCobot 280 starts at $599 for the Arduino-controlled variant and tops out at $849 for a Jetson Nano build — a 6-DoF arm with a 250 g payload and 280 mm reach, sized for a desk, not a production line. It exists mainly to teach manipulation and run small ML experiments cheaply, and it’s the cobot we compare most often against UFACTORY’s xArm 6, a step up at $9,500–10,499 with a real 5 kg payload, 700 mm reach and 0.1 mm repeatability — enough to run pick-and-place research that actually generalizes to production hardware. Unitree’s Z1 sits above both at $15,999 plus a stated $1,000-per-unit shipping charge, a 2 kg-payload arm popular in labs already standardized on Unitree’s SDK ecosystem for legged robots.

Mobile manipulators: the embodied-AI middle tier

Three platforms dominate university and startup labs doing whole-body manipulation and data collection, and they price a decade apart from each other in a telling way. Hello Robot’s Stretch is the most transparent: Stretch 4 lists at $29,950 on the manufacturer’s own purchase page, itemized down to a $1,495 docking station and a $2,495 Jetson Orin NX add-on, with the previous-generation Stretch 3 still sold at $24,950 for labs that don’t need the newer hardware. Pollen Robotics’ Reachy 2, now owned by Hugging Face, launched at a publicly quoted $70,000 and ships with the open-source LeRobot stack — a price that reflects a full humanoid-class upper body rather than Stretch’s single telescoping arm.

PAL Robotics’ TIAGo is the odd one out: no current price exists anywhere on the manufacturer’s site. The only manufacturer-linked figures — roughly EUR 30,000 to 60,000 depending on arm and hand configuration — date to TIAGo’s 2015 launch and are over a decade stale against current hardware. If you want one, you’re asking for a quote, not checking a price list, and it’s worth remembering that number will be built around today’s component costs, not 2015’s.

Humanoids: watch for the SDK tax

Two Unitree models make the same trap visible. The G1 lists at $13,500 for the base 23-DoF configuration — except the base unit isn’t programmable. Actual research access requires an EDU configuration, which runs $43,900–73,900 through US resellers, three to five times the headline price. The R1, the cheapest full humanoid on open sale at $4,150–5,900 after a June 2026 China price cut, has the identical structure: the R1 and R1 AIR ship with no SDK at all, and only the separately priced R1 EDU adds unitree_sdk2 and ROS 2 support. Before comparing a humanoid’s sticker price to anything, check whether that price buys an API.

Booster T1 avoids the trap by shipping a fully open-source SDK across the line, at $22,000 in China rising to roughly $50,925 for a US-reseller Standard configuration with grippers — a premium that buys RoboCup-proven hardware (Booster won the 2025 humanoid soccer championship) rather than gated software.

The starkest lesson here is K-Scale Labs’ K-Bot: a headline $8,999 price for the first 100 units, taken as $100 preorders — and then the company shut down in November 2025 after failing to raise further funding, cancelling every preorder and refunding deposits. K-Scale open-sourced the entire hardware and software stack on its way out, so the design lives on for free, but the robot itself was never delivered at any price. For a research budget, a platform’s price is only half the number that matters; the other half is whether the vendor will still be shipping parts and firmware updates in two years. Unitree’s Go2 sits at the opposite extreme on that score — a $1,600–19,430 quadruped line from a manufacturer already selling in volume, which is why it remains the default legged-locomotion research platform for labs that don’t need a Boston Dynamics Spot-sized budget.

The expensive outlier: a hand alone costs more than most whole robots

Shadow Robot Company’s Dexterous Hand is the reminder that manipulation, not mobility, is where robotics research money actually goes. The full 20-DoF Shadow Hand Plus prices at roughly $127,000 (EUR 110,000, per the manufacturer’s own pricing post), inclusive of shipping, installation and training — more than any full mobile manipulator on this list, for an end effector you’d still need to mount on an arm. A cut-down 2-finger, 7-DoF version runs about EUR 45,000. Both figures come from a single manufacturer post that hasn’t been restated since, so treat them as an anchor rather than a live quote — Shadow sells on request, not off a price list.

What this means for a lab budget

If the goal is teaching manipulation basics, a myCobot 280 gets a student running real code for under $600. If the goal is embodied-AI data collection on a mobile platform, Stretch 4 at $29,950 is the most transparently priced option, and the one most likely to still be supported next year given Hello Robot’s track record of iterating rather than a debut launch. If the goal is humanoid locomotion and manipulation research specifically, budget for the EDU configuration, not the headline number — and budget some diligence time into whether the company selling it will still be around to support it.
